Kelowna 2005 Civic Elections - Stephen May for Mayor
Return to Kelowna 2005 Civic Elections Page...
Stephen MayMaintenance and energy consultant Email: stephenmay@shaw.ca Website: www.voteformay.com Phone: 762-2207 Statement:
I believe that is necessary for the people of Kelowna to have a true voice at city hall so that we can have an active role in deciding the changes to our city. It is not enough to vote for someone that promises to keep the taxpayers best interest in mind; the
residents need to have a direct voice at city council, not a just a representative voice. A policy change for city council meetings needs to include the right for any resident to stand up and be heard.
We need to stop changes to the OCP without the consent of the affected residents. The OCP is meant to be a plan for the future, but far too often developers request and are granted changes, and these changes are not always in the
best interest of the residents and taxpayers of Kelowna.
Kelowna needs to take advantage of this economic upswing and require developers to include 20% affordable housing in their projects. We have far too many people in Kelowna that are or are about to become
homeless and we need to take action now. To keep young people in our city they need to be able to afford to live here too.
Tax changes need to be part of the municipal ballot, there should be a policy or bylaw that requires all tax changes to be voted on. Yes, this would require that the city thinks ahead and plans properly for the
next 3 years, but that is something that they should be doing anyway.
The city’s non-elected administration needs to be accountable to the taxpayers as well. For the city to enact any new policy or bylaw, they too need the consent of the voters.
The alternate approval process needs to be taken away from the city. This process is the least democratic process in the city’s arsenal, as it relies on the apathy of the voters. If there is an issue that must be
decided before the next election, then put it to a referendum, if the issue is that important then the cost would be valid.
Its time for a new council with innovative ideas, on Nov 19 don’t just vote, vote for change.
