Kelowna 2005 Civic Elections - Kimberly Ouellette for City Council

Return to Kelowna 2005 Civic Elections Page...

Hello Kelowna. My name is Kimberly "Kim" Ouellette. I'm 41 years old and my husband Wayne Perepolkin and my children are very supportive through this whole process on the road to working to be your mayor.

As do other candidates there are issues that are coming up in this election that are now on the front burner, although while these same issues were on the back burner, not much concern was given to them when the people needed a voice. Funny how every Kelowna Citizen's issues, concerns and opinions matter at this time.

As a resident of Kelowna for 11 years, I have observed the growth of Kelowna and surrounding areas, some with proud feelings and some with disgust that current city council has no insight to the changes that could affect our children/s grandchildren/s future. (Simpson Covenant, Private Properties). There's an old native saying "We do not inherit the land from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." This means we are responsible for caring for Mother Earth for future generations.

I would have to say that no matter how you look at big development or big business we are going to be faced with it.

My questions to the people of Kelowna is how are we going to change our way of thinking and in how we let things get done by City Hall and every aspect in what we let City Hall and Council members get away with, now that is out there on the front burner?

It is so very easy to say that they (candidates) could do this or that, although when you get down to the guts of this election in the end really who is going to keep their word when once in office. Now this is where I'm supposed to say that hey! I can do that and I can promise you this, just vote for me.

Well! I won't say that. This is what I understand that we as a community stand together on all issues and concerns.

Yes there are priorities and principles that we need to address as a whole, Kelowna Citizens, Inuit, Metis, Westbank and WFN and all marginal people. Must be listened to and heard in every aspect no matter how big or small the issue or concern.

These areas must always be on the front burner:

  • Youth Centers - Youth Detox Homes
  • Homeless Citizens
  • Promote for a second bridge crossing/more efficient traffic lights and over/under bypasses in and around the city and areas.
  • Senior Citizens who are in need of more affordable housing due to fixed income
  • Affordable Housing: while this has been studied really what has been solved concerning the deficiency of affordable housing or subsidized

The fact is it is not getting better, it's getting worse.
