Why should you care?

This is plan for Kelowna BY Kelowna - The city has already gone through 21 iterations with unprecedented public input of a comprehensive plan for downtown.

This visionary plan balances all interests in a workable plan that ensures the BEST POSSIBLE WAY given all concerns and needs for: environmental sustainability, low-income & disabled housing, preserving heritage, creating higher density, creating MORE green space (an entire acre), ensuring economic sustainability (job creation), sunlight corridors, view corridors and much more. The plan even includes a DAYCARE and public multi-use facility!

As for the hotel, it has been situated after much research and with public input in such a way that there will be MORE public access to green space and better access to the waterfront. In addition, it will enable small businesses to set up shop and there will be tiered areas open to the public to gain better views of the lake. It is a boutique hotel that will create permanent jobs and be an anchor for small business – NOT a blight on our community. The other key point is that we will actually have people enjoying our downtown core YEAR-ROUND which is certainly NOT something we can say right now.

So, we can move forward with the status quo which will mean either further decay and dilapidation OR the possibility of people building to the current C7 plan which does NOT give us any cohesion or serious thought to the aforementioned.

Imagine Downtown Kelowna as a place YOU want to go - more green space, businesses on Lawrence & Leon Avenue and people living, working and playing downtown. For this vision to become a reality, we all need to take action! Write Council to say that you SUPPORT CD21 as presented!

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

MoveKelownaForward.com is a group of citizens who have decided to provide a voice to the people of Kelowna who want responsible development to happen. We want to make sure that developers know that this city will welcome their plans and ideas. We also want to make sure that Kelowna City Council knows that there are people out here who want revitalization developments to take place and we will support them in this venue.

About Us:

This group was formed in August 2004 with Duane Tresnich taking the lead role. Tony D'Andrea joined us later as our Public Relations member. We are always looking for more like-minded people who feel like us and want to join this committee.

Lawson Landing is the first project the Move Kelowna Forward committee has decided to voice their approval for as a group. We will review other upcoming major developments for consideration of our support.

In that consideration we take into account our five directives that we encourage of a developer. We like to see development that:

  1. Proposes a mixed use, high density plan that creates a positive revitalization of an area and establishes a visionary precedent for future developments
  2. Positively contributes to the economic and social welfare of Kelowna in terms of community services and recreation, new jobs, and economic prosperity that leads to the welcoming of new citizens
  3. Works closely with the City of Kelowna to ensure responsible planning in regards to proper land use and allocation, affordable housing, demographics, etc…
  4. Creates new publicly accessible green lands and water lands where possible and/or attempts to preserve present green lands and water lands and
  5. Ensures continued preservation of the environment and considers environmental design concepts such as green roofs and geothermal heating.

Thank-you for your support and please voice your opinion so it can be heard. And we invite you to help us out in our cause.

Be sure to visit our forum for the latest updates on Kelowna Developments. If you have any development rumours be sure to post then.

Kelowna 2030 Survey
As part of a new public planning program called Kelowna 2030: Greening Our Future, the city is looking for input from a wide range of citizens and groups.

The end result will be a revised Official Community Plan that will guide our land use, development, transportation and infrastructure decisions for the next twenty years.
